Timberlands fit differently than sneakers. If you order your usual size without checking, you will probably get it wrong. Here is everything you need to know before buying.
The General Rule
Timberland boots run wide and slightly large. Most people size down half a size from their sneaker size. If you are between sizes, go down rather than up — the leather stretches and breaks in over time.
Width Considerations
The 6-inch boot comes in standard (M) width. If you have narrow feet, the standard Timberland will feel loose from the start and will not break in tighter — size down a full size or look for a snugger lace-up style. If you have wide feet, Tims run naturally accommodating and your regular size is usually fine.
Breaking In
New Timberlands are stiff. That is by design — the nubuck leather needs 2–3 weeks of regular wear to soften and mold to your foot. Do not judge the fit on day one. Wear them around the house first, then short trips, then all day. By week three they should feel broken in.
Thick Socks
Timberlands are designed to be worn with thick socks. If you are sizing, wear the socks you plan to wear with them. A thin ankle sock will give you a misleadingly loose feel in store or when trying them on at home.
Kids Sizing
GS (Grade School) Timberlands run true to Timberland sizing — same half-size-down rule applies from their sneaker size.
