How to Style Sneakers With Any Outfit: A No-Nonsense Guide

Sneakers work with almost everything if you understand one rule: proportion. The shoe has to make sense with the silhouette of the outfit, not just the colour. Here is how to get it right every time.

Chunky Sneakers (ASICS, New Balance 990s)

Chunky retro runners need volume to balance. Pair them with wide-leg or straight trousers, baggy denim, or shorts with a longer hem. Skinny jeans with chunky sneakers is a 2015 look — avoid it. The shoe is the statement; keep the top half simple.

Low-Profile Silhouettes (AF1, Dunk Low, Samba)

Low-profile shoes are the most versatile. They work with slim fits, relaxed fits, shorts, and chinos. If you are building a one-pair rotation for maximum outfit coverage, a clean AF1 Low or Samba is the answer. Keep them clean — scuff marks read louder on a flat shoe than on a chunky one.

Jordans

Jordan 1s and 4s read as statement shoes regardless of colourway. Match the dominant accent colour to one other element in your outfit — a jacket, bag, or cap — and let the shoe anchor the look. Do not match too precisely; you want harmony, not a costume.

Boots (Timberlands)

Timbs work with everything from work wear to streetwear. The classic 6-inch wheat colourway pairs naturally with earth tones — olive, brown, tan, dark green. For streetwear: oversized hoodies and cargo pants or baggy denim. Stack the denim slightly on the boot, do not tuck it in.

The Colour Rule

White, black, and neutral colourway sneakers go with 95% of outfits without thought. Loud colourways (bright red, royal blue, neon) need a neutral outfit to avoid clashing. When in doubt: wear the loud shoe with all black or all white and let it do the talking.
